TO A.I. OR NOT TO BE
Where does one even start on the incredibly complex, nuanced, conversation about A.I..
I saw a TikTok the other day that talked about how if you use A.I. to create your cover art, they know for sure the book will be written with a.i. and be an absolute pile of dog doodoo.
The initial premise riled me up and made me sort of sad at the over reaching negative view point. I watched the video a number of times, trying to figure out how to respond. In the end I didn’t as I don’t really know where my feelings are on a.i.
I think first I’d like to take a few words and note my sadness at the comment that if someone use a.i. for the cover then OBVIOUSLY they used a.i. for everything else, and so their book, their art is trash and not worth any consideration. We are human beings and way more nuanced than that black and white statement (thanks therapy lol).
Maybe the writer is wonderful with their words, but at a complete loss as to where to find great cover art. maybe its a social anxiety thing, maybe its a financial thing, maybe its a ignorance thing. maybe its countless other issues that would drive one to use a.i to create cover work for their wonderful book, none of which makes them fodder for such dismissive attitudes.
I admit I dabble with a.i.. Not for my book, but for some of the peripherals. Like creating fun little character reveals etc. or even just seeing if the way I think of my character in my head and then wrote them out is compatible.
I know a.i. will be, is, changing the creative landscape in dramatic ways at the moment. I also admit to some serious missteps and questionable practices in a very unregulated space.
My dad worked at GM when robotics were being introduced and there was much the same prevailing sentiment. I remember when CGI was first used (Tron, I think) and the movie industry exploded with the idea. Same when digital artists took over from illustrators.
Please don’t misconstrue my words to indicate my whole hearted allegiance with a.i. but I think the issue is in its infancy and needs discussion. Its fault shouldn’t be used to brow beat those that are trying their best, but for various means turn to an emerging technology. The way to shape our creative space, incorporating ANY new technology should be with open conversation and a firm stance when that technology is used inappropriately. But to be dismissive and use it to shame others… well, that’s more telling of the type of individual wielding the tool as a weapon.
Let’s be part of the conversation. Let’s help make this emerging tool one that is safe and beneficial for everyone. Not one that is used to shame and insult.
especially not on an app that is run by a.i.
